About This Service

Expert Tarmac Driveways Services

Tarmac (asphalt) is the fast, hard-wearing, cost-effective driveway surface — a smooth, seamless finish that handles vehicle traffic well, drains quickly off its surface, and goes down in a day or two once the groundwork is ready. For larger drives, shared accesses, and anyone after a clean, practical surface without the cost of block or stone, tarmac is an excellent choice. We install tarmac driveways across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, edges, drainage, and all.

As with every driveway surface, the finish is only as good as what's under it. K.A.B Fencing excavates to the right depth, lays and compacts a proper stone sub-base, installs solid edgings (a block-paved or kerb border both restrains the tarmac and finishes it neatly), then lays and rolls the tarmac in proper layers — a base course and a finer surface course — for a dense, durable, smooth result. We set the falls so water runs off to where it should and the surface doesn't pond. Quoted in writing after a free site visit.

Why the sub-base and edges decide the lifespan

Tarmac laid thin, onto a weak base, or without proper edges is exactly the cowboy job people warn about — it cracks, potholes, ruts under car weight, and crumbles at the unsupported edges within a couple of years. A tarmac drive that lasts is built up properly: excavated to depth, a compacted stone sub-base, solid edge restraints to hold the tarmac in (tarmac with no edge support breaks away at the sides first), and the tarmac itself laid and rolled in proper layers to the right thickness. We build it that way, because the difference is entirely in the preparation and the layers, not the look on day one.

Edgings and finishing

Tarmac needs containing, and the edge detail is also what makes it look finished rather than just poured. We commonly frame a tarmac drive with a block-paving border or a kerb/edging course — it restrains the tarmac so it can't spread or crumble at the sides, and it lifts the whole look, breaking up the expanse of black with a contrasting edge. Gulleys, channels, and the join to the road or garage are detailed cleanly. A tidy edge is the difference between a tarmac drive that looks smart and one that looks like a car park.

Drainage and surface water

Tarmac is impermeable, so the water that lands on it has to go somewhere — which means falls and drainage are part of the job, not an afterthought. We set the surface to fall to a suitable point (a channel, gulley, soakaway, or permeable area) so it doesn't pond on the drive or run towards the house or onto the road. As with block paving, a new front driveway over five square metres draining to the road can trigger planning rules unless surface water is managed within the property — we'll advise on this at the quote.

Tarmac vs block paving

Both are excellent drives; they suit different priorities. Tarmac is cheaper per square metre, quicker to lay, gives a smooth seamless surface, and is great for larger areas and shared drives — but it's one colour (black, though red/coloured surface options exist), and a damaged area is patched rather than invisibly relaid. Block paving costs more and takes longer but offers colours and patterns, a more premium look, and individually-liftable repairs. We install both and will give you an honest comparison for your drive, budget, and the look you want.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long does a tarmac driveway last?
A properly built tarmac driveway lasts many years of normal use. Lifespan is decided by the build-up: a compacted stone sub-base, solid edge restraints, and tarmac laid and rolled in proper layers to the right thickness. Thin tarmac on a weak base with no edges — the classic cheap job — cracks and crumbles within a couple of years, which is exactly what we don't do.
Is tarmac cheaper than block paving?
Generally yes — tarmac costs less per square metre and is quicker to lay, which makes it great value for larger drives and shared accesses. The trade-off is that it's essentially one colour and a damaged area is patched rather than invisibly relaid, whereas block paving offers colours, patterns, and liftable repairs at a higher cost. We'll compare both honestly for your drive.
Why does tarmac crack or crumble at the edges?
Because tarmac needs to be contained — without solid edge restraints, the unsupported edges break away first. Combined with a thin layer or weak sub-base, that's how cheap tarmac drives fail fast. We frame the drive with a block or kerb edging that restrains the tarmac and finishes it neatly, and build the base and layers properly.
Do I need planning permission or drainage for a tarmac drive?
Tarmac is impermeable, so surface water has to be managed — we set falls to a suitable drainage point. A new front driveway over five square metres draining to the road can need planning permission unless the water is managed within your property. We build in the drainage and advise on the regulations for your drive at the quote.
Can you put a decorative edge on a tarmac driveway?
Yes — we commonly frame a tarmac drive with a block-paving border or kerb course. It restrains the tarmac so it can't spread or crumble at the sides and lifts the whole look, breaking up the black with a contrasting edge. It's both practical and what makes a tarmac drive look smart rather than plain.
Do you install tarmac driveways across Nottinghamshire?
Yes — we lay tarmac driveways throughout Nottingham and the surrounding Nottinghamshire towns and villages, on full properly-built bases with proper edgings and drainage. Ring us with the area and access for a free site visit and fixed-price quote.
