Expert Gate Installation in Nottingham

A gate is the one part of a boundary that moves every single day — so it takes more abuse than any fence panel ever will. Get the build right and it swings true for twenty years; get it wrong and it drops, drags, and won't latch inside a season. At K.A.B Fencing we supply and fit gates of every kind across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire — from a single timber garden gate to a pair of 4-metre composite driveway gates — and we make them to measure so they suit your opening and match the fencing they sit in, rather than being squeezed in as a generic off-the-shelf size.

We build in timber, metal and composite, and the right choice depends on the job. Softwood and hardwood give the traditional look most homeowners want and can be stained or painted to any colour. Galvanised and powder-coated steel is the go-to for security and for wide spans that need to stay rigid. Composite has taken off for driveways because it carries the look of timber with none of the rot, warping or repainting — it's the same low-maintenance material as a composite fence, so a gate and boundary can be matched perfectly.

What separates a gate that lasts from one that fails is almost never the gate itself — it's the hanging. Posts have to be sized for the weight of the leaf and set deep in concrete, hinges have to be heavy enough and properly adjustable, and a pair of gates needs a drop bolt and the right ground clearance so it clears a sloping drive. We set every gate post in concrete, hang on adjustable morticed or hook-and-band hinges to suit the weight, and fit slam latches, drop bolts and lockable furniture as the job needs.

Whether it's a side gate to make the back garden secure, a picket gate for the front, double gates to close off a driveway, or heavy palisade gates for a commercial yard, every gate is quoted free, made to your measurements, and finished to match what's already on your property.

Types of Gates We Install

Driveway gates — single and double

Driveway gates are the gates we're asked for most, and the spec matters more than people expect. A single driveway gate suits openings up to roughly 3 metres; anything wider is better as a pair of gates meeting in the middle, which keeps each leaf light enough to stay true and swing easily. We check the fall of your drive before we build, because a gate that clears a flat surface will catch on a slope — ground clearance, hinge position and which way the gates open all have to be set to the actual ground. Timber gates are braced with a diagonal to stop them dropping, metal gates are welded into a rigid frame, and double gates get a centre drop bolt into a ground socket so they sit solid when closed.

Choosing the material: timber, metal or composite

Timber is the traditional choice — softwood for value, hardwood for longevity — and it can be painted or stained to any finish, though it will need re-coating every few years to stay at its best. Metal (galvanised then powder-coated steel) is the most secure and the most rigid over wide spans, which is why it's standard for commercial gates and tall driveway gates. Composite is the fastest-growing option for homes: it has the warmth of timber but won't rot, warp, split or fade, and needs nothing more than an occasional wash. If you already have, or are planning, composite fencing, composite gates let the whole boundary match exactly.

How a gate is hung to last

Most gate problems are hanging problems, not gate problems. The posts carry everything, so they're sized to the weight of the leaf — heavier gates get bigger posts — and set in concrete to a depth that won't move with the ground. We hang on adjustable hinges (morticed pin-and-band on timber, weld-on adjustable on steel) so the gate can be trued up perfectly and re-adjusted later if the ground settles. Then it's the ironmongery that makes a gate pleasant to live with: a slam latch you can work one-handed, a lockable bolt or deadlock where security matters, and a drop bolt on double gates. Cut corners on posts, hinges or foundations and even the best-made gate will sag — which is exactly why so many of the gates we're called out to repair just need re-hanging properly.

Security and commercial gates

For yards, compounds and commercial units we fit gates built around security rather than looks: steel palisade gates with the same pale profile as palisade fencing, welded mesh gates, and tall infill gates that can't be climbed or reached over. These are typically galvanised and powder-coated for a long outdoor life, hung on heavy-duty posts, and fitted with commercial-grade locking. Heights and widths are made to the site, and gates are designed to line up with the perimeter fencing so there's no weak point at the entrance.

Matching gates to your fencing

A gate looks best — and works best — when it's part of the boundary rather than an afterthought. Because we make gates to measure and fit fencing too, we can match the timber profile, the composite colour, or the metal finish so the gate reads as one continuous run with the fence on either side. If you're having new fencing and gates together, we build them as a single job; if you're adding a gate to an existing boundary, we match what's already there as closely as the materials allow. Pair it with new fencing and we'll specify both to the same standard.

Gate repairs, rehanging and post replacement

You don't always need a new gate. A gate that's dropped, drags on the ground or won't latch can often be saved by re-hanging it on fresh adjustable hinges, replacing a rotten or snapped post, or renewing worn ironmongery. We replace gate posts (timber or concrete), re-hang dropped leaves, swap failed hinges and latches, and re-brace timber gates that have racked out of square. If a gate is genuinely past it we'll tell you straight and quote a like-for-like replacement instead — but where a repair is the sensible call, that's what we'll recommend.

Gates are just one part of what we do — we also install fencing of every kind and lay driveways and patios across Nottinghamshire, so we can handle your boundary, entrance and drive as a single job.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much does a driveway gate cost?
It depends on the width of the opening, the material (timber, metal or composite), the height, and the ironmongery you need — a single timber garden gate and a pair of tall composite driveway gates are very different jobs. We give a free, no-obligation fixed quote once we've measured up, so you know the exact price before anything is ordered.
Can you make a gate to match my existing fence?
Yes — we make gates to measure and match the timber profile, composite colour or metal finish to your existing fencing wherever the materials allow, so the gate reads as part of the boundary rather than a mismatched add-on. If you're having new fencing too, we build both as one job to the same spec.
Should I have a single or double driveway gate?
As a rule of thumb, openings up to around 3 metres work well as a single gate; wider than that we'd recommend a pair of gates meeting in the middle, which keeps each leaf light enough to swing true and stay square. We'll advise on the best layout for your opening and the way your drive falls when we quote.
What materials do you build gates from?
Timber (softwood or hardwood), galvanised and powder-coated steel, and low-maintenance composite. Timber gives the traditional look and can be painted or stained; steel is the most secure and rigid for wide or tall gates; composite carries the look of timber with no rot, warping or repainting and matches composite fencing exactly.
Can my gates be made ready for automation?
Yes — if you're thinking about an automated opener now or in future, we build driveway gates to the right weight, frame strength and post spec so an automation system can be added, and we'll factor that in when we design the gates. Tell us your plans when we quote so we build with it in mind.
Do you repair or rehang existing gates?
We do. A dropped, dragging or sticking gate can often be saved by re-hanging it on fresh adjustable hinges, replacing a rotten or broken post, or renewing the latch and bolts — usually far cheaper than a new gate. If it's genuinely beyond repair we'll tell you and quote a replacement instead.
How long does it take to fit a gate?
Most domestic gate installations are completed in a day once the gate is made and the posts have set. Larger jobs, pairs of gates, or installations that need new posts concreting in may run to a second visit so the concrete can cure properly before the gate is hung. We'll give you a clear timescale with your quote.
Which areas do you cover for gate installation?
We fit gates across Nottingham and throughout Nottinghamshire, including Colwick, Clifton, Ruddington, West Bridgford, Edwalton, Cotgrave and the surrounding towns and villages. If you're not sure whether you're in our area, just give us a call.
