About This Service

Expert Indian Sandstone Paving Services

Indian sandstone is the most popular natural stone for British patios and paths, and for good reason: it's genuinely natural stone with a warm, characterful riven surface, comes in a lovely range of tones, and costs a fraction of what you'd expect natural stone to. Every slab is slightly different, which gives a sandstone patio a depth and character that man-made slabs can't quite match. We lay Indian sandstone across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire for patios, paths, and seating areas.

K.A.B Fencing lays sandstone the right way — on a full mortar bed over a compacted sub-base, not spot-dabbed onto soil — so every slab is solidly supported and the patio stays flat. Natural sandstone varies in thickness (riven stone isn't perfectly uniform) and is more porous than porcelain, so it wants laying with care, the right falls for drainage, clean jointing, and ideally sealing to resist staining and slow algae. We'll help you choose the colour and finish, lay it properly, and quote it in writing after a free site visit.

Colours and finishes

Indian sandstone comes in a beautiful spread of natural tones — warm buffs and golds (like Raj green and autumn blends), soft greys (Kandla grey), mixed multi-colours, and darker options. The standard finish is riven (a natural, slightly textured cleft surface) which is attractive and gives good grip; sawn and honed finishes give a smoother, more contemporary look. Because it's natural stone, expect pleasing variation slab to slab. We'll bring samples so you can see the tones against your house and garden — colour choice makes a big difference to how the finished patio feels.

Laying it properly — full bed, not dabs

Sandstone must be laid on a full mortar bed over a proper compacted sub-base. This matters even more than with uniform man-made slabs, because riven natural stone varies in thickness, so each slab is bedded individually to bring the surface true and level despite that variation. Spot-bedding on dabs (the cowboy shortcut) leaves voids under the slab that crack the stone and let it rock — a particular problem with natural stone. We bed every slab fully, set the falls for drainage, and bring the surface flat and even. It's slower and more skilled than dab-laying, and it's why the patio lasts.

Sealing and jointing

Natural sandstone is porous, so sealing is worth doing: it resists staining (wine, oil, barbecue grease), slows algae and the green film that natural stone can get, and deepens the colour slightly. We can seal as part of the job. Jointing matters too — modern brush-in jointing compounds give a clean, durable, weed-resistant finish that far outlasts old sand-and-cement pointing, which cracks and lets weeds in. Sealed and properly jointed, a sandstone patio stays looking good with just an occasional wash.

Sandstone vs porcelain

The two most popular patio choices, often weighed against each other. Sandstone is natural, warm, characterful, and great value, but it's porous (benefits from sealing), varies slab to slab, and needs a little more care over time. Porcelain is man-made, ultra low-maintenance, frost- and stain-proof, colour-stable, and dead uniform, but costs more and looks more 'engineered'. If you want natural stone character and value, sandstone; if you want zero-maintenance uniformity, porcelain. We lay both and will give you an honest steer.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Indian sandstone good for a patio?
Yes — it's the most popular natural stone for British patios because it's genuine natural stone with a warm, characterful look, comes in lovely tones, and is excellent value. It's more porous than porcelain so benefits from sealing, and it varies slab to slab (which many people love), but laid properly it makes a beautiful, long-lasting patio.
Does Indian sandstone need sealing?
It's worth it. Natural sandstone is porous, so sealing helps resist staining, slows algae and the green film natural stone can develop, and slightly deepens the colour. It's not essential but it keeps the patio looking better with less effort. We can seal it as part of the job and re-seal as aftercare.
Why must sandstone be laid on a full mortar bed?
Because riven natural stone varies in thickness, each slab has to be bedded individually on a full mortar bed to bring the surface true — and full bedding supports the whole slab. Spot-bedding on dabs leaves voids that crack natural stone and let it rock, which is a common cause of failed sandstone patios. We full-bed every slab, which is slower and more skilled but lasts.
What colours does Indian sandstone come in?
A wide natural range — warm buffs and golds (Raj green, autumn blends), soft greys (Kandla grey), mixed multi-colours, and darker tones — usually with a riven (naturally textured) finish, or smoother sawn/honed finishes. Being natural stone, expect attractive variation between slabs. We'll bring samples so you can see the tones against your house.
Should I choose sandstone or porcelain?
Sandstone is natural, warm, characterful, and great value but porous (seal it) and varies slab to slab. Porcelain is man-made, ultra low-maintenance, frost- and stain-proof, and uniform, but costs more and looks more engineered. Want natural character and value? Sandstone. Want zero maintenance and uniformity? Porcelain. We lay both and will advise honestly.
Do you lay Indian sandstone across Nottinghamshire?
Yes — we lay Indian sandstone patios and paths throughout Nottingham and the surrounding Nottinghamshire towns and villages, on full mortar beds with proper drainage and jointing. Ring us for a free site visit and fixed-price quote.
