About This Service

Expert Block Paving Services

Block paving is the most popular driveway surface in the country, and it works just as well for patios and paths. Individual blocks laid over a properly built base give a strong, hard-wearing surface in a huge range of colours, sizes, and patterns — and because it's made of individual units, a section can be lifted and relaid if you ever need access underneath or a repair, which solid surfaces can't offer. We install block paving across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire for driveways, patios, paths, and parking areas.

The thing that separates a block-paved drive that stays flat and tight for decades from one that sinks and spreads within a couple of years is entirely underneath it. K.A.B Fencing builds the full structure: excavate to the right depth, lay and compact a stone sub-base, install solid edge restraints (the edges are what stop the whole drive creeping apart), lay a sharp-sand bedding course, lay the blocks to your chosen pattern, then compact and joint with kiln-dried sand. We sort drainage and falls so water runs away properly. Quoted in writing after a free site visit.

Why the base and edge restraints matter most

A block drive is a system, and it fails from the ground up when corners are cut. Too thin or poorly compacted a sub-base and it ruts and sinks under car weight; no proper edge restraints and the blocks migrate outward and the whole surface loosens and spreads; wrong falls and water pools or runs the wrong way. We excavate to the correct depth for a driveway (more than for a patio — it's carrying vehicles), compact a proper stone sub-base, haunch in solid edge courses, and bed and joint the blocks correctly. It's the unseen 90% that decides whether the drive is still tight and flat in fifteen years.

Colours, blocks, and laying patterns

Block paving comes in a wide range — standard concrete blocks in every colour from buff and brindle to charcoal and red; larger-format and textured blocks; and premium ranges that mimic stone. Laying patterns change the look and, on driveways, the strength: herringbone (45° or 90°) interlocks best and is the standard for drives because it resists the twisting force of car tyres; stretcher bond and basketweave suit patios and lighter use; and contrasting borders and edging courses frame the area neatly. We'll bring options so you can choose the block, colour, and pattern against your house.

Drainage and SUDS / permeable options

Driveways have to deal with rainwater, and the rules matter: a new or replacement front driveway over five square metres that drains to the road needs planning permission unless it's permeable (or drains to a permeable area within the property). We handle this properly — either with permeable block paving (special blocks and sub-base that let water soak through, which usually avoids the planning requirement) or by building in drainage (channels, soakaways, or falls to a suitable point). We'll advise on the right approach for your drive and the regulations at the quote.

Driveways, patios, paths, and parking

Block paving is versatile: vehicle-rated driveways and parking areas; patios and seating areas; garden and access paths; and edging or borders for other surfaces. The build-up changes with the use — a driveway carrying cars needs a deeper, stronger base than a foot-traffic patio — so we spec each job for what it actually carries rather than building everything the same. We can also tie block paving into other surfaces (a sandstone or porcelain patio with a block-paved drive and path, for instance) as one coordinated scheme.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long does block paving last?
A properly installed block-paved driveway lasts decades — and because it's individual blocks on a sand bed, sections can be lifted and relaid if needed, so it's repairable in a way solid surfaces aren't. Lifespan depends almost entirely on the base: a deep, well-compacted sub-base with solid edge restraints stays flat and tight for many years; a thin or poorly-edged base sinks and spreads. The groundwork is everything.
Do I need planning permission for a block paving driveway?
For a new or replacement front driveway over five square metres that drains to the road, yes — unless it's permeable (or drains to a permeable area within your property). Permeable block paving usually avoids the requirement. We handle this properly with either permeable paving or built-in drainage, and we'll advise on the regulations for your specific drive at the quote.
What's the best laying pattern for a driveway?
Herringbone (laid at 45° or 90°) is the standard for driveways because it interlocks the blocks best and resists the twisting force of car tyres, so it stays tight under vehicle use. Patterns like stretcher bond and basketweave suit patios and lighter foot traffic. We'll recommend the right pattern for the use and the look you want.
Why do some block drives sink or spread?
Almost always a base problem — too thin or poorly compacted a sub-base sinks under car weight, and missing or weak edge restraints let the blocks migrate outward so the whole surface loosens. We excavate to the correct depth, compact a proper sub-base, and haunch in solid edges, which is exactly what prevents that.
Can you repair or relay existing block paving?
Often yes — one advantage of block paving is that sunken or spread sections can frequently be lifted, the base corrected, and the blocks relaid, rather than replacing everything. We'll assess whether a repair or a relay is the sensible option at the site visit. We also clean and re-sand tired block paving (see our driveway cleaning and sealing service).
Do you install block paving across Nottinghamshire?
Yes — we install block paving driveways, patios, and paths throughout Nottingham and the surrounding Nottinghamshire towns and villages, on full properly-built bases. Ring us with the area and use for a free site visit and fixed-price quote.
