About This Service

Expert Concrete Driveways Services

Concrete is one of the toughest, longest-lasting driveway surfaces you can lay — a properly built concrete drive shrugs off heavy vehicles, won't rut like tarmac or shift like loose gravel, and needs almost no maintenance. Modern concrete is also far from the plain grey slab people remember: brushed, pattern-imprinted, and exposed-aggregate finishes give it real character. We install concrete driveways across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, built to last decades.

A concrete drive lives or dies on what's underneath and how it's reinforced and jointed. K.A.B Fencing excavates to the right depth, lays and compacts a proper stone sub-base, reinforces the slab (steel mesh or fibre to control cracking), sets the correct thickness for the loads it'll carry, forms expansion and control joints so the slab can move without cracking randomly, and falls the surface for drainage. Get any of those wrong and concrete cracks; get them right and it's the fit-and-forget drive. We quote in writing after a free site visit.

We also handle concrete bases and hardstanding — for sheds, garages, outbuildings, and parking areas — to the same standard.

Why the base, reinforcement and thickness decide it

Concrete is unforgiving of a poor base — more so than any other drive surface, because a rigid slab on soft or uneven ground cracks and rocks. We excavate to a proper depth, lay and compact a stone sub-base, and pour the slab at the right thickness for a driveway carrying cars (thicker again where heavier vehicles are involved). The slab is reinforced — steel mesh or fibre-reinforced concrete — to hold it together and control cracking, and laid to a consistent depth so there are no weak thin spots. This groundwork is the difference between a concrete drive that lasts 30+ years and one that cracks up in two, so it's exactly where we don't cut corners.

Finishes — brushed, pattern-imprinted & exposed aggregate

Concrete doesn't have to be a plain grey slab. A brushed (broom) finish is the classic, practical, grippy surface. Pattern-imprinted concrete is stamped while wet and coloured to mimic block paving, brick, slate, or stone — a decorative, seamless surface with no joints for weeds. Exposed-aggregate exposes the decorative stone in the mix for a textured, hard-wearing, attractive finish. We'll go through the finishes, colours, and patterns at the quote so the drive suits the property — a printed-concrete drive in particular can look like premium paving at a different price point.

Joints, drainage and crack control

All concrete moves with temperature, so the skill is controlling where it cracks. We form expansion and control joints at the right spacing so the slab can expand, contract, and settle along planned lines rather than cracking randomly across the face. Concrete is impermeable, so — like tarmac — surface water has to be managed: we fall the drive to a suitable drainage point, and a new front driveway over five square metres draining to the road can need planning permission unless the water's handled within the property. We build the joints, falls, and drainage in from the start, because they're what keep a concrete drive sound and crack-free.

Concrete vs tarmac vs block paving

Each has its place. Concrete is extremely durable and low-maintenance, takes heavy loads well, and with a printed or exposed-aggregate finish looks far better than plain grey — but a damaged slab is harder to repair invisibly than block paving, and it must be jointed and reinforced correctly. Tarmac is cheaper and quicker for large areas but is one colour and patches rather than relays. Block paving offers colours, patterns, and individually-liftable repairs at a higher cost. We install all three, so we'll give you an honest comparison for your drive, budget, and the look you want.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long does a concrete driveway last?
A properly built concrete driveway — correct sub-base, reinforcement, thickness, and joints — lasts decades, often 30+ years, with very little maintenance. It's one of the most durable drive surfaces there is. Lifespan is decided by the build quality underneath; a slab on a poor base or without proper joints cracks early, which is exactly what we avoid.
Will a concrete driveway crack?
All concrete moves with temperature, so the goal is to control where it cracks rather than prevent movement entirely. Reinforcement (steel mesh or fibre) plus expansion and control joints at the right spacing let the slab move along planned lines instead of cracking randomly. Done properly, a concrete drive stays sound; random cracking is almost always a sign of a missing-joints or poor-base job.
What finishes can a concrete driveway have?
More than people expect. A brushed (broom) finish is the practical, grippy classic. Pattern-imprinted concrete is stamped and coloured to mimic block paving, brick, slate, or stone for a decorative, joint-free surface. Exposed-aggregate shows the decorative stone in the mix for a textured finish. We'll show you the finishes, colours, and patterns at the quote.
Should I choose concrete, tarmac, or block paving?
Concrete is the most durable and low-maintenance and, with a printed or exposed-aggregate finish, can look like premium paving — but it must be reinforced and jointed correctly and is harder to repair invisibly. Tarmac is cheaper and faster for big areas. Block paving offers colours, patterns, and liftable repairs at a higher cost. We install all three and will compare them honestly for your drive.
Do I need planning permission for a concrete driveway?
Concrete is impermeable, so a new front driveway over five square metres draining to the road can need planning permission unless the surface water is managed within your property. We design in the falls and drainage to handle this and advise on the regulations for your specific drive at the quote.
Do you install concrete driveways across Nottinghamshire?
Yes — we lay concrete driveways, bases, and hardstanding throughout Nottingham and the surrounding Nottinghamshire towns and villages, on full reinforced and jointed slabs. Ring us with the area and access for a free site visit and fixed-price quote.
